My Top 5 Favorite Ghost Novels

1. Hell House by Richard Matheson

Richard Matheson is THE MAN. Stephen King credits him as one of his biggest

influences. In this 1971 novel, four people are hired by a billionaire to investigate

the possibility of life after death. They must stay at the most haunted house in the

world…Hell House. Unlike my book, which only has mild scares, this book is terrifying.

2. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

This 1959 novel is also about four people staying at a haunted house, including a scientist

who wants to prove the supernatural exists. Some call it the best haunted house story ever

written. It’s definitely a classic and a must read for fans of the genre. It’s not hit-you-

over-the-head horror. It’s subtle. But it has one of the creepiest scenes I’ve ever read in

my life. *shudder*

3. Bag of Bones by Stephen King

Clearly Stephen King has to be on this list. He’s written about ghosts more than once, but

my favorite has to be Bag of Bones. It’s about a writer. *ding!* Suffering from writer’s

block. *ding! ding!* Staying at a haunted lake house. *ding! ding! ding!* How could I

not love this book?

4. Someone in the House by Barbara Michaels

I have mad love for Barbara Michaels. She is my favorite author of all time. Her mix of

supernatural, mystery, romance, and gothic settings with strong female leads have been

influential to me both as a reader and a writer. (At one time, I owned every single one of

her books (just the Michaels’ ones, not her books written as Elizabeth Peters). About ten

years ago, we were moving and I was overcome with “get rid of everything” syndrome

and donated my collection to the library. I regret that decision to this day. I love the

library. But I miss my Barbara Michaels collection. Sadface.) Anyhow, choosing from

her—oh, thirty or so—books is an almost impossible task. But I’ll go with the first one I

read, when I was a teenager, called Someone in the House. It’s about two people staying

in an isolated gothic English manor as a summer retreat while they write a book. But they

are not alone….

5. Ghosts by Noel Hynd

This was published in 1993, and I think it’s unfortunately out of print. But if you can

find it at a library, it’s worth the read. Ghosts follows a skeptical police officer as he

investigates murders in a mansion on Nantucket Island. Murders committed by a…ghost?

It features a cool twist at the end that people may recognize from a well-known movie,

but there’s only so much you can do with ghost stories that hasn’t been done before

and—as far as I know—Noel Hynd did this twist first. So kudos to him. Great book.

I've only read a few ghost stories, cause I'm a big scary cat! I will have to check these books out.
