"On April 21, 2008, Steven "Crash" Crashinsky saved more than a thousand people when he stopped his classmate David Burnett from taking their high school hostage armed with assault weapons and high-powered explosives. You likely already know what came after for Crash: the nationwide notoriety, the college recruitment, and, of course, the book deal. What you might not know is what came before: a story of two teens whose lives have been inextricably linked since grade school, who were destined, some say, to meet that day in the teachers' lounge of Meadows High. And what you definitely don't know are the words that Burn whispered to Crash right as the siege was ending, a secret that Crash has never revealed.
Until now.
Michael Hassan's shattering novel is a tale of first love and first hate, the story of two high school seniors and the morning that changed their lives forever. It's a portrait of the modern American teenage male, in all his brash, disillusioned, oversexed, schizophrenic, drunk, nihilistic, hopeful, ADHD-diagnosed glory. And it's a powerful meditation on how normal it is to be screwed up, and how screwed up it is to be normal."

An impressive story that captured me even before the story began, I still can't get in my mind everything this kid went through.

I really liked how this story is told. Crash has one life that is so interesting I could not stop reading. Told in his point of view, Crash goes back and forth from the past to the present, telling his story. This sometimes confused me. For me, some parts didn't flow well so I had to go back and make sure I didn't miss anything. Being in Crash shoes is like being in a novella. So many friends problems,  girl problems and even family drama I couldn't keep up with. Let me tell you that the family drama dragged me in quick. Some parts I was like,"O.M.G! That DID NOT happen!" But it did. Once the story gets going, it's easy to see Crash and see why he is the way that he is.

There are several love interests being that Crash takes after his father. (At least, in my perspective) He is always with a different girl. Though there is one girl who manged to catch his eye an um... other parts. It's easy to see how Crash life comes together and then falls apart right in front of your eyes. It's all easy to relate to and nothing about it feels off. If anything, Crash's story is something that needs to be told in order to understand.

Crash and Burn is an realistic story that captures the reader. Insightful and relentless, Crash tells a story that is engaging and full of mayhem. Executing a strong story, Crash and Burn is eye-opening.

I give it 4 BITES!

Happy Reading!

  1. Wow this sounds right up my alley! Contemps have been so good to me lately I've been really into them and this one has been added to my list! I especially love when they use flashbacks (past/present storytelling), when done right it can be really compelling! Great review!
