Halloween Character Booktacular with (Jus Accardo)

Hello everyone! Today I have an awesome from Jus Accardo Touch series :)
Enjoy!

"A couple crossed the lawn, the girl dressed as Little Bo Peep, and her freakishly tall date, like a black sheep. She was leading him toward the house by a long leash and collar. Oh, yeah. Curd was going to have a field day with that.

Kale lifted his hood to peer at the couple. “I still don’t understand the point of all this.”
I smiled and wrapped my arm around his waist. It’d taken some convincing, but I managed to coax him into coming to Curd’s famous Halloween bash. Every year something epic happened. Last year’s highlight was a brawl between the yellow Teletubby and Thor. The year before that, Santa Claus did a strip tease, then ran naked—except for the snowy beard and hat—up and down the road for twenty minutes. I couldn’t wait to see what happened this year. “It’s fun!”

Kale didn’t seem convinced. He watched Bo Peep and her human sheep enter the house, then sighed. “You say that a lot. You said that about the place last night. I broke that man’s jaw. I’m not sure he thought it was fun…”

Oops. I’d taken Kale to the Firehouse’s charity haunted house and it hadn’t ended well. In fact, I was pretty sure he’d traumatized several small children when one of the workers jumped out at us wearing a ski mask and waving a chainsaw. Kale had gone all Denazen-Ninja on him, and, well, yeah… “That was my bad. I should have warned you people were going to jump out at us.”
“Is someone going to jump out at us in there, too?”

“No jumping,” I promised, taking his hand. “Maybe some kisses…”
He smiled, then hesitated. “From you, right?”
            “From me,” I confirmed.
He nodded and we started across the street. Just before we got to the door, Kale paused. “And who am I supposed to be again?”

I reached across and adjusted the quiver strapped to his back. He was decked out in black jeans and a matching hoodie, with leather gloves and a bow. “Hawkeye. He’s a good guy. Fights crime with mad archery skill.”

Kale frowned and pulled one of the arrows out, waving it around. “How am I supposed to fight crime with cardboard arrows? I don’t see them doing much damage.”
“You’re not. It’s just a costume. For show. You’re here to have fun, not fight.”

“Then why dress like someone who fights crime?”

“That’s the point of Halloween. You get to be someone else for a night.”
“I don’t want to be someone else,” he said firmly, giving the fake arrow another shake. “I don’t want you to be someone else, either.”

“I’m still me—just dressed in awesome leather.” I twirled around and gave my but a little wiggle. I’d decked myself out as the Black Widow. “Come on. Admit it. I look awesome.”
The arrow slipped from Kale’s hand as he ran a finger across my cheek and down my neck. “You always look—”

A black blur danced into my field of vision, and an odd growling sound filled the air. I opened my mouth to warn him, but it was too late. Kale had already whirled around, knocking a Grim Reaper to the grass and pinning him there by the throat.

I rolled my eyes and grabbed a handful of his hoodie, hefting upward. The guy stumbled to his feet and fled toward the house without looking back. “Are you still wondering why we didn’t use real arrows?”
            “I see your point.”

Halloween Character Booktacular with (Miranda Kenneally)

Hello ! Today I have the lovely Miranda Kennealy with an awesome excerpt that Catching Jordan fans will love!!

In my first book CATCHING JORDAN, Jordan’s love interest is a guy named Ty Green. Ty’s little sister, Vanessa, is still in middle school during CATCHING JORDAN, but in my fourth book, RACING SAVANNAH (coming in December 2013), Vanessa is one of the main characters. Below is a scene from RACING SAVANNAH that will most likely be the finished book. I hope you like the references to Halloween, and avid fans of CATCHING JORDAN and STEALING PARKER should pick up on some references!

Damned Five-Year Plans ~ Vanessa ~

Papa has this prehistoric plaid couch the color of Halloween. Orange, red, gold, and more orange. It’s hideous. It’s hideous and I love it. It may look shitty on the outside, but it’s the comfiest couch ever. If I weren’t so scared I’d kill it, I’d dissect a cushion to see what’s inside. I bet it’d be full of clouds. My brother hates this couch. Ty keeps trying to buy Papa this leather and marble monstrosity that belongs in a castle, but I keep defending Halloween Couch’s honor. I’m not surprised Ty wants to replace it. He always thinks we should have the best, no matter if it’s practical or not. Like, he’s dating a top-of-the-line supermodel right now. It’s like he went to the supermodel factory and said, “I’ll take that one please. The one with the extra-long legs and the big boobs and hair that falls past her butt.” I’m thinking of my brother because I’m lying on the Halloween couch trying to figure out what to write for this stupid Five-Year Plan project the school wants me to do for Rory. I remember Ty having to work on his with a partner. His was easy: In five years, Ty will be playing for the NFL. And his partner was right. Ty is playing for the NFL. However, he was a bit wrong because Ty wanted to play for the Cowboys but he got picked up by the Cardinals and I like to make fun of him because, even though I don’t know shit about football, I know that Cowboys are more badass than birds. I type on my laptop: In five years, I’ll be Mrs. Rory Whitfield. Then I furiously jab the delete button because I hate girls who say stuff like that. It’s so lame. It’s as if they aren’t real people unless they’re attached at the hip to the guy they want. I’m a hypocrite. I haven’t been able to think about much besides Rory for the past year. I miss him. I hate watching Savannah Barrow moon over Jack Goodwin, not only because of what I did with Jack, but because I saw what she became because she lusted after him so hard. I don’t want to be that kind of girl. “How about macaroni and cheese for dinner?” I hear Papa call out from the kitchen. “Sounds great,” I say, knowing what’s coming. “Well get in here and make it then,” Papa jokes. “Let’s just order pizza.” “I love you,” Papa says with a laugh. “I love you, too,” I say. “Turn the game on.” “I hate football.” “Too bad. Your brother’s playing tonight.” “You mean he’s sitting on the sidelines holding a clipboard, right?” “Back-up quarterback is an important job!” “If you say so.” “He’s learning from the best quarterback in the league.” “I want pepperoni on my pizza!” “Don’t think you can change the subject by distracting me with pepperoni. You’re sucking up to me.” I grin to myself. I hate pepperoni, but Papa loves it. We always split our pizzas right down the middle. He’s my best friend. I’m sure lots of people would think it’s pretty lame that my best friend’s my grandfather. But whatever. I stare at the blinking cursor on my laptop screen. Where will I be in five years? Out of college, I guess. God only knows what I want to study. Will I have a boyfriend? Will I have any friends at all? Will Rory and I finally be back together? It’s my fault I lost Rory, I know that. When I first moved to Tennessee, I was only thirteen. My brother and I had to leave Texas to move in with Papa because my dad had died in a car wreck, and the same crash paralyzed my mom. When I started ninth grade, it was like all the girls automatically hated me because of my looks. I wasn’t stupid – I knew what I looked like, and I knew I drew the same reactions in guys that my brother elicits from the supermodels from the supermodel factory. I tried to make friends, I really did, but nobody wanted to be friends with the boyfriend-stealer. It’s not like I actually stole boyfriends. I just took their attention away from their girlfriends. I didn’t do it on purpose or anything, it just happened. And because my mom was sick and my dad had just died, people mistook my sadness for snobbishness. It was like all anyone could see was long blond hair and a skinny waist and blue eyes. How could a person who got so much attention from guys be so damned lonely? I had stopped talking to nearly everybody except Ty, Papa, and Mrs. Woods, the mother of one of my brother’s ex-girlfriends. That’s when one day, out of the blue, Rory Whitfield asked me out. He approached me in the library during lunch, and his face looked so sweet, so earnest, I couldn’t help but say yes. He wasn’t my type at all. His arms were thinner than strands of spaghetti, but I loved his smile and adored the way he cracked his knuckles when he was nervous. I fell in love with him. Hard. I shake my head, thinking of how funny it was when he threw a surprise party for me at Pizza Hut on my sixteenth birthday. We dated for nearly two years. I lost my virginity to him. I told him I loved him and he said the same thing to me. And then my brother went away to school. And all I had was Papa and Mrs. Woods. And Rory, and I loved him more than anything. And then my mom died. And I freaked out. I was dumb. I told Rory that I needed to make sure I really loved him, and I needed some time apart, and I pushed him away, because I didn’t think my heart could handle it if anything happened to him. I needed to forget about him. Rory cried. He said he’d wait for me. I knew he would. And then one night I went to a party. Got too drunk. Ended up sleeping with Jack Goodwin. How can Rory forgive me when I can’t even forgive myself? I don’t know where I’ll be in five years, I type. I don’t know how to get out of this place.

Halloween Character Booktacular with (Gretchen McNeil) + GIVEAWAY!

Hello! Today I have another awesome excerpt from Ten! Loved this book soo much :)

Author links:

Halloween, 2011 Jenny stood frozen in the hallway just outside Teddy's room, body tense, feet rooted to the floor. The sound she'd heard from downstairs was louder now, and what she'd thought were the bumps and thuds of her little brother playing in his room after bedtime now appeared less innocent. As she gazed at him from the doorway, Teddy lay curled up in his Avengers comforter, eyes closed, chest heaving slow and steady as he slept. Alone. But Jenny could still hear the footsteps. Footsteps. Yes, that's exactly what they were. Heavy, plodding footsteps pacing back and forth across the floor of her kid brother's room, slightly uneven with a hiccup between every other step as if the person making them walked with a limp. Person? Jenny swallowed, her throat parched and raspy. No "person" made these footsteps, unless Jenny had developed a sudden case of cataracts. Her eyes took in the entire length of Teddy's room, illuminated by the dullish blue glow of his night light, and nothing moved. Not even a flutter from the curtains, yet she could clearly make out the steady canter of the limping footsteps. She could actually trace them from left to right across the room, pausing for a split second at the closet door, then retreating to the other side of the room, pausing again at the edge of Teddy's bed. Rinse, repeat. Jenny couldn't pull her eyes away, her brain desperate to see something moving in the near darkness, unable to grasp what might be happening in her house. Then, as suddenly as they began, the footsteps stopped. Silence descended upon the house. Jenny
continued to stand in the bedroom doorway, sweat beading on her upper li, despite the cold. Jenny realized she was shivering; all the warmth had been sucked out of the house. That's when she felt it. A bony hand gripping her shoulder. Jenny swung around and— Meg dropped her pen on the bed as her cell phone purred from the nightstand. Once, twice, three times in rapid succession. She sighed and closed her writing journal, then reached across a stack of pillows and picked up her phone. Three texts, all from Minnie, and as she held the phone in her hand, debating whether or not she actually wanted to read Minnie's drunk texts from her boyfriend Gunner's Halloween party, the phone vibrated again. More messages. Meg sighed. Typical. She swiped her finger across the screen, and Minnie's texts began to scroll. MINNIE: OMG, I can't believe you're not here. What were you thinking? MINNIE: And don't give me that bullshit about being sick. What am I, stupid? MINNIE: The whole football team's here. And half the cheerleading squad. This is the party of the century you're missing! Meg laughed to herself. There was no place on the planet she'd less rather be than at Gunner's party. Because if Gunner was there, his best friend T.J. would be, too. And Meg couldn't handle that. It was bad enough that Minnie was dating Gunner as a means to get closer to T.J., worse that Meg had been forced to listen to her best friend go on and on and on ad nauseum about T.J. during the last few months. It wasn't that Meg didn't like him. Nope it was much worse than that. Meg was in love with T.J., too. She'd been hiding it from Minnie for so long it had become her baseline. Minnie would rhapsodize that someday T.J. would realize she was the perfect girl for him, and Meg would just nod and smile, all the while indulging in her own fantasies about T.J., his gorgeous dimpled smile, how his lips would feel pressed against her own… In private, she could handle it. She could put on her game face when it was just the two of them hanging out. But at party after Minnie had downed a few beers? No way. Meg discovered first hand that spring just how painful it could be to watch Minnie throw herself at the boy Meg was in love with. So Meg's coping mechanism? Fake the stomach flu, stay home, and write a new short story. Buzz, buzz, buzz. Great. Minnie was in rare, needy form tonight. MINNIE: I seriously have the best costume here. Sexy Alice in Wonderland FTW! MINNIE: T.J.'s here. Of course. OMG, he's doing like a Johnny Depp pirate thing that is SO FUCKING SEXY. MINNIE: I'll send you a photo of us, okay? Let me find him. Sexy pirate thing? Meg dropped her phone on the bed. It buzzed almost immediately with new texts. Part of Meg desperately wanted to see the photo, a mash up of her love for Johnny Depp and her love for T.J. Fletcher. Then again, did she really want to see Minnie in her sexy Alice dress which barely covered her ass, thigh highs and pushed up cleavage, draped seductively over T.J.'s arm? She wasn't sure she could handle that. Again. Buzz. Buzz. Dammit. MINNIE: Huh. Can't find him. I swear T.J. was here a minute ago. MINNIE: OMG, if he took off with that slut Brenda Raines I'm going to kick both of their asses. T.J.: Are you home? Meg froze. T.J. was texting her? On Halloween? While he was at the "party of the century?" A warmth spread across her chest, all stupid and silly and delicious in the way only a text from T.J. Fletcher could make her feel. With a trembling hand, she picked up her phone and typed, "Yeah." The doorbell rang almost immediately. Meg caught her breath. Could it be T.J.? Meg's dad stuck his head out of his bedroom door just as she stepped into the hallway. "Trick or treaters?" he said, pushing his thick glasses up the bridge of his nose. "At this hour?" "I'll get it, Dad," Meg said, hoping her voice didn't sound too anxious. He shrugged, and ducked back into his room. Thank God. If it was T.J. at the door, the last thing she needed was her dad hovering around her. Meg reached the door and realized her heart was thundering in her chest. She needed to calm down. It's not T.J., she said to herself. Just a late trick or treater, like Dad said. But as Meg switched on the porch light, she caught sight of a hat through the beveled glass windows in the front door. A tri-corner night. Like a pirate.
