Blog Tour: Crash and Burn

Hello and Welcome!

Crash and Burn Blog Tour
Five bloggers, five dates.

"On April 21, 2008, Steven "Crash" Crashinsky saved more than a thousand people when he stopped his classmate David Burnett from taking their high school hostage armed with assault weapons and high-powered explosives. You likely already know what came after for Crash: the nationwide notoriety, the college recruitment, and, of course, the book deal. What you might not know is what came before: a story of two teens whose lives have been inextricably linked since grade school, who were destined, some say, to meet that day in the teachers' lounge of Meadows High. And what you definitely don't know are the words that Burn whispered to Crash right as the siege was ending, a secret that Crash has never revealed.
Until now.
Michael Hassan's shattering novel is a tale of first love and first hate, the story of two high school seniors and the morning that changed their lives forever. It's a portrait of the modern American teenage male, in all his brash, disillusioned, oversexed, schizophrenic, drunk, nihilistic, hopeful, ADHD-diagnosed glory. And it's a powerful meditation on how normal it is to be screwed up, and how screwed up it is to be normal."

Unremembered: Interview with Jessica Brody

Hello and Welcome!

"The only thing worse than forgetting her past... is remembering it.
When Freedom Airlines flight 121 went down over the Pacific Ocean, no one ever expected to find survivors. Which is why the sixteen-year-old girl discovered floating among the wreckage—alive—is making headlines across the globe.
Even more strange is that her body is miraculously unharmed and she has no memories of boarding the plane. She has no memories of her life before the crash. She has no memories period. No one knows how she survived. No one knows why she wasn’t on the passenger manifest. And no one can explain why her DNA and fingerprints can’t be found in a single database in the world.
Crippled by a world she doesn’t know, plagued by abilities she doesn’t understand, and haunted by a looming threat she can’t remember, Seraphina struggles to piece together her forgotten past and discover who she really is. But with every clue only comes more questions. And she’s running out of time to answer them.
Her only hope is a strangely alluring boy who claims to know her from before the crash. Who claims they were in love. But can she really trust him? And will he be able to protect her from the people who have been making her forget?
From popular young adult author, Jessica Brody comes a mesmerizing and suspenseful new series, set in a world where science knows no boundaries, memories are manipulated, and true love can never be forgotten."

"If you’re looking for a story about a good, humble girl, who’s been hurt by someone she thought she could trust, only to find out she’s not as vulnerable as she thought she was and discovers an empowering side of herself that falls in love with the guy who helps her find that self, blah, blah, blah...then you’re gonna’ hate my story.
Because mine is not the story you read every time you bend back the cover of the latest trend novel. It’s not the “I can do anything, now that I’ve found you/I’m misunderstood but one day you’ll find me irresistible because of it” tale. Why? Because, if I was being honest with you, I’m a complete witch. There’s nothing redeeming about me. I’m a friend using, drug abusing, sex addict from Los Angeles. I’m every girlfriend’s worst nightmare and every boy’s fantasy.
I’m Sophie Price...And this is the story about how I went from the world’s most envied girl to the girl no one wanted around and why I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world."

"Remy O’Malley heals people with touch—but every injury she cures becomes her own. Living in a household with an abusive stepfather, she has healed untold numbers of broken bones, burns, and bruises. And then one night her stepfather goes too far.
Being sent to live with her estranged father offers a clean start and she is eager to take it. Enter Asher Blackwell. Once a Protector of Healers, Asher sacrificed his senses to become immortal. Only by killing a Healer can a Protector recover their human senses. Falling in love is against the rules between these two enemies. Because Remy has the power to make Protectors human again, and when they find out, they’ll becoming for her—if Asher doesn’t kill her first."

You know those types of books that give such a rush that you want to do nothing but dive into the book over and over again? Yeah, that's this book. Touched is such a great and amazing story!

The best part about this book is the plot. I loved that it started off hard and raw, leading the reader down a painful road. Then it let up, allowing the reader to stand up, brush off our shoulder, and step into a whole new world. The author did an amazing job in creating a great back round history. I love a good story that is filled with fascinating info. The war, what they really are, and how they came to be today, that is the icing on the cake!

The love interest of course is fierce and so exciting. The bouncing back and forth of sarcastic comments is done tastefully. Meaning, there no dragging out the love/hate relationship. Thank YOU! As much as I like to see two opposite people fall in love, it's turns me off when its like that throughout the whole book. The love interest is so worth wait and once they are together, BAM! There is no stopping them,

Touched is a great debut that I want more of. Touched accomplishes the perfect tone of long history just waiting to be change. It offers a new chance for history to play out differently. Touched keeps the readers heart racing with each chapter.

I give it 5 BITES!

Blog Tour: Defy The Stars

Hello! Today I have a guest post by the lovely Stephanie Parent.

Check out the rest of the tour YA BOUND

"Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories.
Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.
Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.
Defy the Stars is written in an edgy free-verse style that will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder; however, the writing is accessible enough to speak to non-verse fans as well. The novel’s combination of steamy romance and raw emotion will appeal to fans of Gayle Forman, Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols, and Tammara Webber. With a story, language and form that both pay homage to and subvert Shakespeare’s play, Defy the Stars is much more than just another Romeo and Juliet story."

My Dream Cast for Defy the Stars

When I began to compile my dream cast for my novel Defy the Stars, I was super-excited but also a little nervous…I don’t watch too much TV or movies anymore, so most of the actors I automatically think of are the ones I loved when I was a teenager—i.e., the ones in their 30s and 40s now!  So I decided that for my two main characters, I’d include an “old” and “new”—an actor I would have envisioned when I was a teenager, who would of course be too old now, and one who’s the right age now.  For the smaller parts, I just picked a younger actor, and I have to thank my sister Gillian for helping me out with suggestions!
So, here we go…

JULIA
Julia, my protagonist, is a sensitive, artistic girl with a kind of quiet, unusual beauty.  I have to admit that while writing the book, I often thought of Claire Danes in both Romeo and Juliet and, especially, My So-Called Life.  Here are two great pictures of Claire looking thoughtful, a little angsty, and quietly gorgeous:

                                                                                                                                           Link to picture

As for a younger actress, I’d definitely have to go with Emma Watson. She’s incredibly intelligent, thoughtful and unique, and she has her own unusual beauty. Here’s a great picture:

REED:
Reed is the classic bad-boy who tries to pretend like he doesn’t care about anything…when really, he cares too much.  To me, Reed is a lot like Ethan Hawke’s character in the 90s movie Reality Bites.  Here’s Ethan singing his heart out to Winona Ryder:

As for a current actor to play Reed, I’ve loved Jeremy Sumpter ever since he played Peter Pan, and I especially like him with darker hair.  He has stunning blue eyes that seem to change color, just like Reed’s.  Here are those intense blue eyes:

…and here they look lighter, kind of cloudy:

PERRY: For preppy, good-looking but jerky Perry, here’s Drew Van Acker in Pretty Little Liars:

MARC:
Even though Marc doesn’t have a huge role in the book, he’s one of my absolute favorite characters.  I purposely didn’t describe Marc’s physical appearance too much because it isn’t important to the plot, and I wanted readers to come up with their own image of him.  However, I have to say I always pictured Marc with crazy-cool hair and a laidback vibe like Corbin Bleu:

SARA:
Julia’s friend Sara is the polished, super-social, upbeat blonde, like Dianna Agron in Glee:

Sara’s not a cheerleader, but I could definitely see her as one!

So that’s it…do you think I made the right choices?  Which actors would YOU have picked?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Thanks for the awesome guest post Ms. Parent!

Blog Tour: Review: Second Chance

Title: Second  Chance
Series: First Comes Love # 2
Genre: Young Adult-Contemporary
Author: Katie Kacvinsky
Publisher: Self-Pub
Release Date: Setpember 7, 2012
Book: Amazon
Add it To Good Reads: First Comes Love | Second Chance

"Like his name, Gray is dark and stormy. Dylan, a girl always searching for what's next, seemingly unable
to settle down, is the exact opposite: full of light and life. On the outside, they seem like an unlikely
couple. But looks can be deceiving and besides, opposites attract.
What starts as friendship, turns into admiration, respect and caring, until finally these two lone souls
find they are truly in love with each other.
But staying in love is not as easy as falling in love. If Dylan and Gray want their love to last, they're going
to have to work at it. And learn that sometimes love means having to say you're sorry."
This story is so bittersweet yet so good. I knew right from the start where it go. It did nothing but made me want to savor the book a little while longer before it's all gone.

If you have not read the first book, First Comes Love you should. Second Chance comes a few months later and all it not that way it was before. This is one of those stories that is so emotional  you can't help but invest in each character personally. I adored getting to get into the characters shoes and see each of their point of view, At first, I was angry at them! I mean their perfect for each other. Stop fooling around and get serious yo! For real! Instead, fate took them upon another path that lead me to tears :(

I really loved how the plot moved so fast, yet you did not feel it. As the reader, your so immerse in the characters that by the time you get to the end, you don't even realize it's over. With each chapter, the characters come into realization of what has become of them. I never understood why two people who love each other dearly can not just be with each other. Ms. Kacvinnsky has shown me that love expands in so many ways that only when you live it, that you finally understand.

Second Chance is an amazing story that you most definitely want to pick up. Bittersweet yet intoxicating, you can not get enough. Believe when I say you need to take your time and enjoy the book while you can, cause when you get to the end, it will leave a smile of joy on your face.

I give it 5 BITES!

Kiss N' Tell Blog Tour + Giveaway!

Who I Kissed by Janet Gurtler
October 1, 2012 Sourcebooks Fire
"She never thought a kiss could kill…Samantha didn’t mean to hurt anyone. She was just trying to fit in...and she wanted to make Zee a little jealous after he completely ditched her for a prettier girl. So she kissed Alex. And then he died—right in her arms. Was she really the only person in the entire school who didn’t know about his peanut allergy? Or that eating a peanut butter sandwich and then kissing him would be deadly? Overnight Sam turns into the school pariah and a media sensation explodes. Consumed with guilt, abandoned by her friends, and in jeopardy of losing her swimming scholarship, she’ll have to find a way to forgive herself before anyone else will."

Coming Up For Air:
Gurtler explores her inspiration for the book and her character development of a girl who has to learn to forgive herself for a tragic mistake that upends so many lives.

I haven’t made a secret of the fact that this book was inspired by my son, Max, a cool dude who happens to have a severe peanut allergy.  This book takes my worst fears and puts them it into action. I used to joke with Max that before he kisses a girl, he has to ask her what she had for lunch. Or dinner.  He doesn’t find it funny anymore.

We did have a talk when I decided to write this book. I told him that though it was fiction, it was partly to raise awareness of the dangers that kids with allergies face. And I told him of course, that it was something I never ever wanted to him to deal with. So no kissing girls.  Ever. Ha ha. Not really the last part. He didn’t find that funny either.

Long before the character of Sam came to life for me, I remember hearing a story in the news, similar to the storyline in WHO I KISSED, about a child dying from a ‘peanut butter kiss’. It stuck with me as a parent of a peanut allergy kid. How horrifying it would be for everyone. Including the child who accidentally caused a death. I also remember hearing a story about a kid at a birthday party who died when the knife used to cut the cake (peanut free cake) was tainted with peanut butter.  I don’t know if that story was true, but when you have a child with allergies those types of things make an impression.

As a parent of a kid with severe food allergies, you get used to people who don’t understand the severity of the allergy. People who complain about not being able to take a peanut butter sandwich to a peanut free school when it is “all their child will eat.”  On one level, I totally get that. Confession. I LOVE peanut butter. But on the other hand, something innocent has the potential to cause my child harm, or even cause death and I don’t want to let that happen. I’ve had to shake off my loathing to make people uncomfortable. I have to speak up. I understand that most people don’t mean harm when they send a peanut butter sandwich to school or open a bag of peanuts beside me in the airport. But I have to ask them to put away peanuts or nuts when my son is around. Or to ask their kids to wash their hands after eating something with nuts before playing with my son.

My strongest argument for why other people should care is -- how would YOU feel if your child (or you) caused the death of my son. I know I would feel pretty darn awful (to put it mildly), but what would it do to your child and/or you? How could a child possibly deal with something like that? How could a parent possibly deal with their role in something like that?  And the thing is, it’s possible.

It’s about taking ownership of that possibility, but also dealing with the consequences of a very honest mistake.  WHO I KISSED looks at how an innocent girl, who unwillingly and unknowingly is involved in the death of a boy who dies. A boy who is allergic to peanuts.  It’s about thinking how that would affect you? How would you cope? What would you do?

Ultimately, like most of the books I write, I think there’s also hope in this book. And some lighter moments too. I created two characters, Aunt Allie and Fredrick to help Samantha deal and also to help the reader deal with the emotional intensity of the book.  Plus there’s hot boys. I like them too.
