Review: 10 Things We did (And Probably Shouldn't Have)

Title: 10 Things We Did (And probably shouldn't have)
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult- Contemporary
Author: Sarah Mlynowski
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: June 7, 2011
Book: ARC sent by publisher

"2 girls + 3 guys + 1 house – parents = 10 things April and her friends did that they (definitely, maybe, probably) shouldn't have.

If given the opportunity, what sixteen-year-old wouldn't jump at the chance to move in with a friend and live parent-free? Although maybe "opportunity" isn't the right word, since April had to tell her dad a tiny little untruth to make it happen (see #1: "Lied to Our Parents"). But she and her housemate Vi are totally responsible and able to take care of themselves. How they ended up "Skipping School" (#3), "Throwing a Crazy Party" (#8), "Buying a Hot Tub" (#4), and, um, "Harboring a Fugitive" (#7) at all is kind of a mystery to them.

In this hilarious and bittersweet tale, Sarah Mlynowski mines the heart and mind of a girl on her own for the first time. To get through the year, April will have to juggle a love triangle, learn to do her own laundry, and accept that her carefully constructed world just might be falling apart . . . one thing-she-shouldn't-have-done at a time."

I have to admit that when I started this book, I did not intend to finish it in one sitting. I thought I read a couple of chapters and save the rest for tomorrow. What really grab me about this book is the main character, April. She is a unique teenage girl that goes through so much and grows up before the readers eyes. What I like most about her is the way that she handled things. Yes, she did a whole lot of wrong things, but she learned from her mistakes and move on from it.

What I also like about this book is the serious talk of sex in it. Now, normally for me, this is too much. But I really like how Ms. Mlynowski handled the situation of sex in this book. Not only did April encounter sex in this book, but she learned the responsibilities of sex and the consequences of it. I like how April took care of herself by going to Planned Parenthood, getting check, tested, and prepared. I do not condone sex out of marriage, but if you are doing to it, at least be smart about it.

April as well as her friends go through a lot  but learn so much. They had planned thinking that it was going to easy to be alone, with no parents. Then reality hit. They had to face up to their mistakes and take responsibility like an adult. I think this a great book about growing up and learning things the hard way. Their is lots of sex (implied), drinking, cursing, etc, but again without these element you will not be able to grasped the story as it should be grasped. I recommend this book for 18+.

I give it 4 BITES!

Review: Settling

Title: Settling
Series: Solid # 2
Genre: Young Adult- Supernatural
Author: Shelley Workinger
Publisher: Createspace
Release Date: July 4, 2011
Book: ARC sent by author

"At the beginning of the summer, Clio Kaid was one of a hundred teens brought to a secret Army installation. But it was no ordinary camp and they weren’t ordinary kids…

Soon after learning they were the products of a secret genetic experiment, the teens began developing super-abilities ranging from bounding lightness to blocking heaviness; blinding brilliance and the ability to vanish. These same gifts made them targets of a psychopath in officer’s clothing, and they found themselves fighting for their lives.

Picking up where “Solid” left off, Clio and her friends realize that they aren’t ready to go home; they’re determined to stay on campus and continue their journey of self- discovery. But someone doesn’t feel the same way and will do anything to drive them away – even kill.

Friendships will be tested, abilities will evolve, and more secrets will come out as the teens race to stop the killer before he sets his sights on one of them…"

Ever since I got the first book, I have been hooked. And this book had the hooked sink even deeper into my skin. I am still shocked with the ending, it just....WOW!

The story line of this book is slow at first. It picks off right where the first book left off and the reader is updated on all the things that has been going on around the camp. I enjoyed reading up on the characters and seeing their progression in their powers.  A lot of the characters had really changed while others remain the same. There were some new characters introduce that made this book so good to read.

The characters had a lot of growing up to do. Clio is one character that change but not in a good way. I am disappointed in some of  her decisions but then again she had a lot going on. Friendships in this book, loyalties in this book were tested, badly. As I sat and read this I think I gasped like a million times. There is so much going on with the characters, secrets and alliances being made behind each other backs that it made you wonder what is really going on.

Now for the ending. I have to admit that I like the ending of this book. I am not fond of a sad, bitter ending but it worked for this book. And if anything, the ending really reflected the state of the next book. Which of course makes me super, excited to read. If you have not picked up this series you should. This is one heck of a read that you will never forget! READ IT!

I give it 5 BITES!

Happy Reading!

Review: Sometimes It Happens

Title: Sometimes It Happens
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult-Contemporary
Author: Lauren Barnholt
Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: July 12, 2011
Book: ARC sent by publisher

"On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Sebastian dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction--and one night, into a passionate kiss.

The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Sebastian, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think..."

I really enjoyed reading this book. I like the feel of reading it and really diving into the characters feelings. SO much happen in this book that it is hard not to get caught up in the feelings that are swirling around.

So the story line of this book is the  best. As the reader, you fall into the story fast seeing everything that happen. What I like was the switches from the past summer to the present. The switches were easy to follow and very intense. The pacing of the story flowed really well along with the build up of the story. Chapter by chapter the build up continue till is explodes. I think my heart was racing so fast, even I was nervous about the secret that was about to be spilled.

The characters were a whole other element. The main character Hannah is so innocent. She had no intentions of hurting or planning what happen but I liked her cause she worried about everyone else and not herself. You can tell right off that all of this was really hurting her and that she was sorry. Ava on the other hand I felt was selfish. She held on to some secrets as well, so let's not go there girlfriend! My only gripe was the ending. I am not totally satisfied with it. I felt like maybe it could of ended a little more complete.

This is a great book with loads of drama in it. It is filled with secrets, betrayals, and a love that no one could imagine that would happen. It will make your heart race and you will gasp!

I give it 4 BITES!

Happy Reading!

Review: Sass and Serendipity

Title: Sass and Serendipity
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult- Contemporary
Author: Jennifer Ziegler
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Release  Date: July 12, 2011
Book: I Read Banned Books Book Tours

"Daphne Rivera and her sister Gabby could not be more different.

For fifteen-year-old Daphne, the glass is always half full, a dab of lip-gloss can ward off a bad day, and the boy of her dreams—the one she's read about in all of her beloved romance novels—is waiting for her just around the corner.

But Daphne’s older sister Gabby wishes Daphne would get real. In Gabby’s world, everyone’s out for themselves, wearing makeup is a waste of time, and boys only distract you from studying before they break your heart. The only boy Gabby trusts is her best friend, Mule, who has always been there for her.

Both Gabby and Daphne are still reeling from their parents’ divorce, though in very different ways. While Gabby will never forgive her unreliable father for failing her mother, Daphne idolizes her daddy and is sure that everything would work out fine if her cranky mom would just let him back into their lives.

When a crisis leaves the girls and their mom homeless, help comes from an unexpected source, and both girls are courted by surprise suitors who shake up their views of the world. Suddenly the glass isn’t so clearly half empty or half full . . . and love seems a lot more complicated than they ever could have imagined."

I just love how an author can take a classic and make it in to something new. I really loved diving into this book and how it was the same yet different.

The plot line is good. I really how how even though the point of view switched up a lot, you can right away tell which sister it is. I loved how the author made these two sisters so different. Gabby, I loved her and really connected with her. I connected with her because I am just like her. Growing up with a single mother with 2 other siblings, I had to grow up fast. Gabby had to be the responsible one and help her mother out. She understood as such a young age, the responsibility that she carried on her shoulders. Daphne is just a free girl. It may seems at times that she think of only herself, but she is a young teenager and should be one.

I really like how Ms. Ziegler incorporate a real life issue in the book. Ms. Ziegler really did a great job in capturing the voice of two very different teenage girls. It was so good, that even I found myself laughing free with Daphne or getting responsible with Gabby. I like that Ms. Zieger took the reader into the world with her writing and let you be in the characters shoes.

My only gripe was the love interest. I am a sucker for romance, so it did disappoint me with how the love interest went. I was hoping for it to go a different way, but in the end, I am glad that both sisters can be happy.

Sass and Serendipity with a great classical read. Filled with lots of drama, romance, an d great writing, there is nothing like it to read. The Rivera sisters will have you by the heart from the very first page.

I give it 4 BITES!

 Happy Reading!

Review: Lost Voices

Title: Lost Voices
Series: Lost Voices # 1
Genre: Young Adult- Supernatural/Fantasy
Author: Sarah Porter
Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books
Release Date: July 4, 2011
Book: ARC sent by publisher

"Fourteen-year-old Luce has had a tough life, but she reaches the depths of despair when she is assaulted and left on the cliffs outside of a grim, gray Alaskan fishing village. She expects to die when she tumbles into the icy waves below, but instead undergoes an astonishing transformation and becomes a mermaid. A tribe of mermaids finds Luce and welcomes her in—all of them, like her, lost girls who surrendered their humanity in the darkest moments of their lives. Luce is thrilled with her new life until she discovers the catch: the mermaids feel an uncontrollable desire to drown seafarers, using their enchanted voices to lure ships into the rocks. Luce possesses an extraordinary singing talent, which makes her important to the tribe—she may even have a shot at becoming their queen. However her struggle to retain her humanity puts her at odds with her new friends. Will Luce be pressured into committing mass murder?"

I really love mermaid stories and when I read the back of the book it captured me. Mostly cause the storyline was different then what I see around. And this book was different yet it did run along the same lines as other mermaid stories.

The characters in this book I really like. They were all the same as in the burden that they carried as a a human. I really like the old tale of how they become mermaids. It gave a an interesting twist on the story all together. Luce has been through so much. I adored her stealth and wittiness. She was different but didn't flaunt it. She just wanted to live a happy normal life for once. One thing that really grabbed me about her was her ways of finding out things. Even when she was sneaking around looking for answers, she never gave to much of herself away. She was always once step ahead of everyone.

One thing that really grabbed me about this book was that there was no love interest. These girls or rather mermaids, their tale of surviving and what they went through was enough to hold the reader. They had to come to the conclusions if what they were doing was right. Do they seek forgiveness and let it go or do they allow humans to pay for the past things that was done to them? What these mermaids come to find is that there anger has caused more pain then what they know.

I give it 4 BITES!

Review: Imaginary Girls

Title: Imaginary Girls
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult-Contemporary
Author: Nova Ren Suma
Publisher: Dutton Juvenile
Release Date: June 14, 2011
Book:  Library Thing

"Chloe's older sister, Ruby, is the girl everyone looks to and longs for, who can't be captured or caged. When a night with Ruby's friends goes horribly wrong and Chloe discovers the dead body of her classmate London Hayes left floating in the reservoir, Chloe is sent away from town and away from Ruby.

But Ruby will do anything to get her sister back, and when Chloe returns to town two years later, deadly surprises await. As Chloe flirts with the truth that Ruby has hidden deeply away, the fragile line between life and death is redrawn by the complex bonds of sisterhood.

With palpable drama and delicious craft, Nova Ren Suma bursts onto the YA scene with the story that everyone will be talking about."

When I first got this book, I was super excited to read it. I knew that this book would be completely different from any other book out there, and I was right!

Imaginary Girls is one totally creeped out book. As I began this book and read more in
to it, I got goosebumps. The storyline is something unique that it took me by surprise. I loved how the storyline built up to something the reader never expected it to be. As the Chole discovers what Ruby did,  my heart was racing! I really liked how Chole figured everything out. She was sneaky about it and even scared of her own sister at times. Heck, I was scared of Ruby!

The story line of this book is what made this book. I really like how Ruby made such a sacrifice to save her own sister but of course at a deadly cost. As I continued to dive deeper into this book and realized what Ruby did, I think all the hair stood up on the back of my neck. But it also made me wonder why Ruby did what she did in the first place. The story line flowed well, pace well, and built up to an amazing ending. The ending of the book was shocking but I knew something had to be done in order for it to balance out.

Imaginary Girls is a great book! As the reader, the elements in the book, spookiness, mysteries, secrets, really come out in the wonderful writing that Ms. Suma presented. It none other than grab the reader, drowning them in the reservoir of Ms. Suma's world that she created!

I give it 4 BITES!

Review: Sharks & Boys

Title: Sharks & Boys
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult- Contemporary
Author: Kristen Tracy
Publisher: Hyperion Book
Release Date: June 28, 2011
Book: Netgalley/ ARC given to me by Joni at Paragraphs

"When 15-year-old Enid Calhoun follows her boyfriend Wick to Maryland for a party, fearful that he might be intending to cheat on her, she finds herself sneaking on board a houseboat where Wick and his friends plan to have a wild night. But before the boys discover their stowaway, a hurricane strikes, and the teenagers are carried miles from the shore and shipwrecked. What follows is a harrowing, yet heartwarming, story of survival, as the teens battle hypothermia, dehydration, man-eating sharks--and along the way, confront their own deepest secrets, including their catalytic roles in the disaster."
I can't begin to tell you how much I really loved this book. There is so much in it that I don't even know where to start!

Okay, so, the storyline...AMAZING! I really loved how it all flowed so smoothly that nothing passes you in the story. As the reader, you immediately fall into the story and into Enid shoes. Enid is your typical teenager with realistic problems that we all face, except she get stranded in the ocean with nothing but boys. At the beginning, we see Enid struggling in finding who she is. Enid deal with family problems, boyfriend drama, etc. Things are crazy in her life and she is dealing with it the best that she knows how. I loved how insecure she was and how she kept all her feelings inside. It made Enid much more real to the reader. Ms. Tracy really grabbed the voice of the teenager really well. I love how easy it was to not only see Enid in your mind but as well as her feelings.

I also loved how we, as the reader see things from different points of view. I have never read a book where I can really see from a guys point of view. I love it when Landon said," Don't think like a girl." He had such great advice and such strength to his sister. I really admired him for being a great older brother. I think I will even take that advice for myself.

One thing I enjoyed in this book are the lessons in it. It really gave a strong message on forgiveness. Forgiveness for not only the others, but for yourself as well. Sometimes we don't realize how angry we are with the person and how much it changed us. It can change relationships, your whole personality cause of the hurt, betrayal, and pain that you are carrying. I love that while Enid is facing such a hard time in her life, that she can have such a great and profound revelation.

Shark & Boys is an excellent read. Full of sharks not only in the water but in life, the reader see the characters grow immensely in this book. This book blew me away in the foundation of the story from hurt and betrayal going to love and forgiveness.
*There was some cursing and drinking*

I give it 5 BITES!

Review: Withering Tights

Title: Withering Tights
Series: Misadventures of Tallulah Casey # 1
Genre: Young Adult- Contemporary
Author: Louise Rennison
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: July 8, 2011
Book: ARC given by Joni at Paragraphs Books

"Hilarious new series from Queen of Teen – laugh your tights off at the (VERY) amateur dramatic antics of Talullah and her bonkers mates. Boys, snogging and bad acting guaranteed!

Picture the scene: Dother Hall performing arts college somewhere Up North, surrounded by rolling dales, bearded cheesemaking villagers (male and female) and wildlife of the squirrely-type. On the whole, it’s not quite the showbiz experience Tallulah was expecting… but once her mates turn up and they start their ‘FAME! I’m gonna liiiiive foreeeeeever, I’m gonna fill my tiiiiights’ summer course things are bound to perk up. Especially when the boys arrive. (When DO the boys arrive?) Six weeks of parent-free freedom. BOY freedom. Freedom of expression... cos it’s the THEATRE dahling, theatre!!"

This was a super cute, super fun read! I adored Tallulah and her funny ways. Tallulah is that type of girl that is super dramatic that it is so funny! She is always making small things big. I adored that she can look at things differently than most people.

One thing that had me laughing in this book was the slang! There was crumps, bejesus, and all sort of slang that made you laugh your head off. It wasn't hard to understand, but you got the meanings right away. The book is filled with characters just like in Withering Heights. Ms. Rennison really  took an classic and made it much more lovely to read. I adored how she incorporated it all in.

The drama in this book is pleasing. You see Tallulah fresh out of the high school, entering the real world. I adored watching Tallulah come into herself and discover new things. The love twist in this book are almost the exact same in Withering Heights.

If you want a fresh new take on a good classic, read this book! You will fall in love with Tallulah and her crazy ways. That is if she doesn't knee you first! LOL : )

I give it 4 BITES!

Review: Brother/Sister

Title: Brother/Sister
Series: No
Genre: Young Adult- Contemporary
Author: Sean Olin
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: June 9, 2011
Book: Library Thing

"Will and Asheley have a troubled past. Their father left them when they were little, and their mother has just been carted off to an alcohol treatment center. Now, they have the house to themselves, and an endless California summer stretching out before them. Through alternating perspectives, they tell the story of how and why their lives spun violently out of control - right up to the impossibly shocking conclusion you'll have to read for yourself to believe."

*Spoiler Alert*
Alright, after giving this book a chance it was nothing like I expected. This was a brother/sister team gone wrong.

First off, there was no incest. Let me clarify a bit. Will did make advances toward his sister, but she knew it was wrong. She ran away as soon as she can get away from him. Will was in love with Asheley. He went off the charts crazy. He relied on her because he had no one else. Asheley has no idea what Will was feeling. Poor Asheley didn't even realize what was going on until it was too late. Will's feelings went haywire for her. Basically he was psycho.

Now the way the book was written is great. The reader gets to see Will's downfall and gets to see his feelings for Asheley as they progressed. You felt his helplessness as Asheley tries to veer away from him. At a point I can understand the need for someone there but he took everything in the wrong way. Asheley knew something was not right but did not want to think badly of her brother. She loved him and wanted to be there for him. But not in the way he was thinking.

In the end, Asheley loved her brother and did what is right for him. She knew something went wrong and did her best to help him out. Even when it hurt her, she had to turn him in for the crimes he committed.

It's a great book. There was cursing, drinking, but no sexually incest. Just a love gone wrong.

I give it 4 BITES!

Review: Griffin Rising

Title: Griffin Rising
Series: Griffin Rising # 1
Genre: Young Adult- Supernatural/Fantasy
Author: Darby Karchut
Publisher: Twilight Times Books
Release Date: June 28, 2011
Book: e-ARC sent by publisher

"For Griffin, it’s time to angel up.

Armed with the power to control the ancient elements of Earth and Fire, sixteen year old Griffin is determined to complete his apprenticeship and rise to the rank of Terra Angeli.

But first, he must overcome a brutal past if he is to survive in this world. Will the perseverance of his mentor and the love of a mortal girl give Griffin the strength he needs to triumph over the monster still haunting him?"

I loved this book! I love the whole angels concept in books and this book blew me away with it. It had everything that a paranormal book needs. Great plot, and amazing characters that triumph till the very end.

The plot of this book is amazing. I really enjoyed it and got into quickly. The main characters Basil and Griffin really where a set of characters that I fell in love with. First off, Basil is a great mentor. He knew what was going on with Griffin and he saved him from it. I like that he knew what Griffin went through and did not pressure him. He worked with him, slowly gaining his trust and re-building it, even in the hardest times. I love that Basil took Griffin under his wing and held him there whenever Griffin fought back. Griffin, my heart went out to the guy. He has been through so much abuse and it was hard for him to trust. Griffin had a lot to learn and get through. He was a tough character who was able to get back on his feet.

The plot twist of this book was cool. I enjoyed watching Griffin grow into a man and even fall in love. I loved watching him happy and smiling for once. He had some heart-ache, but I for one as glad that past quickly. I don't like to see Griffin sad.

Ms. Karchut wrote an exhilarating book! It is an engrossing book that picks you up right away. I am hoping that in the next book, I can learn more about what happen with his angel test and see more of Griffin. I can only hope that the future that lies with Basil and Griffin will be a good one!

Kismet Blog Tour: Review/Giveaway: Starcrossed

Title: Starcrossed
Series: Starcrossed # 1
Genre: Young Adult- Fantasy
Author: Josephine Angelini
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release Date: May 31, 2011

"How do you defy destiny?

Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is—no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.

As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together—and trying to tear them apart."

WOOHOO! I simply adored this book. Not only was it addicting, but it had non-stop action! Starcrossed is one of those book that has you addicted even before you get more into the story. It's like, your mind just knows that this book is going to be good. So you keep reading until you hit the last page. And then be upset and mad cause your adventure is now over and you must wait!

The plot in this book is mind blowing. Let me the first to tell you sometimes fate sucks. In this book, fate just does not let them be. Lucas and Helen from the start are fighting against fate. I admit that I liked them fighting. It gave you more tension between the characters. You felt their love grown with each growing frustration.

The characters were a whole another set of story. Each characters had such a unique identity. They all had their flaws. I like how each of them played a role in Lucas and Helen's life's. They all stuck by each other as a family and did what they thought was best. Now some may think that some decisions were wrong, and I thought so too. But in the end, I knew they did it out of the kindness of their own heart. They were only looking out for each other.

The modern day use of Greek mythology totally rocked. I have seen books pop up everywhere with this plot line and I adore every single one. Ms. Angelini took Greek mythology and added a great new twist to the story. She kept the power of the Gods and Goddesses, just added a great heart-breaking love story and lots of action. Ms. Angelini created a amazing world that any reader can dive into. I can't wait to read the next book!

I give it 5 BITES!

Josie was born in a tiny town in Massachusetts called Ashland. When she meets people from Massachusetts and tells them ‘what part’ she hails from, she usually gets one of two answers. The first is: “Ashland. Isn’t that in Oregon?” And the second is: “Did you just say Ass-land?”

Her next stop was about as different from her hometown as it gets without leaving the country. As soon as Josie was legal, she packed a bag and moved to New York City to attend NYU. Somehow, she managed to squeeze in a little higher learning between bar tending shifts and graduated with a BFA.

Massively in debt with college loans, she then moved to Los Angeles for reasons that are still a little blurry. Something about the weather was mentioned, and a vague idea to write poetry and find herself. She found that she is a terrible poet, but she never gave up on the writing bit.
